The Ministry of Maritime Affairs announced that five private companies submitted proposals on Friday for potential routes for the newly planned ferry service connecting Gwadar to the Gulf region.
Earlier, on July 1, the ministry unveiled a strategic initiative to expand Gwadar Port’s functionality by adding new shipping lines and launching a ferry service to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
This initiative aims to create a cost-effective and direct sea link for both passengers and cargo, especially benefiting overseas Pakistanis and cross-border traders.
Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry chaired a meeting to assess the technical and financial aspects of the ferry operations. According to a ministry statement, five companies presented their proposals during the session.
Chaudhry remarked that private sector interest in the ferry project is growing, and multiple routes are currently being evaluated. He highlighted that the ferry service would boost regional trade and connectivity.
He added that this initiative will simplify passenger and cargo movement between Pakistan and the Gulf, while also elevating Gwadar’s significance in the international maritime sector.
The ministry noted that further evaluations of the submitted proposals were instructed, with directions to ensure all technical, regulatory, and logistical requirements are thoroughly met before the ferry service is launched.
During the meeting, Minister Chaudhry also held a phone conversation with Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti to discuss provincial collaboration. The chief minister assured full support for the project.
In a statement on X, the Balochistan government confirmed that the discussion covered key aspects of Gwadar’s development, public services, and job creation for youth.
CM Bugti mentioned that the provincial government is seriously considering the Gwadar-to-Oman ferry route, which would ease travel for residents and facilitate religious pilgrims.
He affirmed that the initiative would mark a significant step toward enhancing regional connectivity and reiterated the province’s commitment to supporting the full operationalisation of Gwadar Port at all levels.
